Fat Camp - Day 26

Cereal is one of the mandatory foods of a succesful fat camp. (Photo by MrTopf)

Finally, some results! I weighed myself at the gym and was pleased to see that my weight had gone up back to 61. I know there's still work to be done and foods to be eaten, but at least I have proven that it's not impossible for me to gain weight.

I would like to thank my good friend, cereal muesli, without whom I don't think I could've done this. It's incredible how a mere 100 grams of that stuff contains 450 kcal. Add 150 kcal from the milk (I only use the fatty kind, obviously) and you've got a surprising number of calories in a normal-sized bowl. And being the recovering cereal-addict that I am (or was), one bowl is never enough.

I'm a little worried about all the sugar and corn syrup and whatnot in the ingredients, but what the heck... 62 kilos, here we come!

Fat Camp - Day 23

The power of the cream shake compels you! (Photo by SummerTX)

Good lord, I'm approaching a month of fat camp. This was supposed to last only for a week, but since no visible results manifested themselves, I have been forced to continue to eat as much as I can.

I got myself a new blender and have been enjoying delicious cream smoothies since. I had already forgotten how tasty they were. I even ate some bread and french fries the other day - something I haven't done in ages. The bread tasted pretty good, but I can say with certainty that I can live without the french fries. Also, I didn't feel well at all afterwards, so I think I'll steer clear of both in the future.

Having said that, I'm thinking of adding some long-lost carbohydrates to my diet for the time being. The thing that I miss most about the bottom of the food pyramid is cereal. I'll trade that sandwich for a nice big bowl of cereal and cold milk any day, yes siree. I know it contains sugar and all that, but that's what me and the rest of the wanna-be chubbies are here for!

Fat Camp - Day 16

Hamburgers - my key to the long-lost kingdom of lard. (Photo by pointnshoot)

Looks like cream's back on the menu, boys! In addition to relighting my long-lost love for heavy cream, I have done the unthinkable and eaten hamburgers and drunk coke, both of which should give me a boost on my way to chubby city.

To once again practise the art of making cream smoothies, I whipped out the old (well, actually brand new) blender that I had gotten from the store in exchange for the previous one that broke after six months. As it happens, the new one broke after using it twice. So here's a free tip for you smoothie criminals: if you're thinking of buying an OBH Nordica blender, think twi... again.

I'm thinking of taking it back and asking if they could give me some chocolate bars in return.

Fat Camp - Day 15

Beer - the enjoyable way to lose weight. (Photo by stoicviking)

I believe I have now proven without a doubt that one cannot gain weight by drinking beer alone. My theory has been and still is that a "beer gut" is due to drinking beer and eating carbohydrates, not just beer. Don't believe me? Try it yourself. Even if it fails, it'll have been an entertaining experiment.

What has this got to do with fat camp? Well, I skipped the pizza part on Saturday and ate a steak instead. That was all I had to eat that entire day. We had a long pub crawl, so there was no shortage of pints, but this strange diet actually had a negative impact on my weight - I'm back to less than 60 kilos. Don't ask me how it's possible (beer has carbohydrates, after all), but it is. So, it's going to be less drinking and more solid food this week to cross that 60 mark again.

Fat Camp - Day 12

The gods made dark chocolate, and I saw that it was good. (Photo by suavehouse113)

I feel like I've been eating more than ever this week, but today when I stepped on the scale I was shocked to see that I'm still at 60 kilos. It would seem logical to me that, even though I'm mostly on a low-carb diet, the generous amounts of chocolate and bananas I've been consuming during this fat camp would have had some kind of effect on my weight. Apparently not.

I know that it's possible to gain weight by eating more carbohydrates, but since I'm concerned about negative health effects other than weight gain, I'm reluctant to do so. On the other hand, simply increasing - or trying to increase - the amount of protein and fat I eat doesn't seem to be doing the trick. I know for certain that my meals have been bigger than normal, and yet I'm stuck at 60 kg.

I think tomorrow is going to be another "mandatory beer and pizza"-day whether I like it or not (and a part of me really does), so maybe that'll help. Two kilos should not be this hard.

Fat Camp - Day 8

Whoever invented the cheesecake was a culinary genius. (Photo by chocolate_monster_mel)

I was back to slightly more than 61 kilos, but then yesterday it had dropped back to 60. As a countermeasure, I ate a huge dinner (with red wine) and finished it off with cheesecake. I'm determinately approaching 62 kg, and after that - who knows?

I ate pizza again on Saturday, and while pizza and beer are certainly key ingredients in gaining weight, eating so much severely impaired my ability to drink beer. It was a real struggle from that point on. Also, I felt pretty terrible the next morning, and I attribute that feeling to the pizza, not the beer (no, really). It reminded me why I don't usually eat pizza.

I've also been consuming large amounts of chocolate, but perhaps for the first time in my life, I'm growing a little sick of it. Instead of craving for chocolate it has become a habit, something mandatory almost. Imagine that. Maybe the key to getting rid of all your addictions is to overdose on them?

Fat Camp - Day 2

Even vegetarians love salami. (Photo by framboise)

Fat camp is going pretty well! I'm back to 60 kilos as of today, and I'm eating salami and drinking beer as I'm typing. Earlier I managed to destroy some yoghurt, fruit and a respectable 300 grams of salmon with olive oil. And of course I have eaten my mandatory portion of chocolate, the ingredient without which no fat camp could ever be complete. This shouldn't even take a week, though I'm beginning to feel I could get used to this kind of eating.

"I am the lizard king, I can eat anything!"

Fat Camp - Day 1

Nothing beats a cold bottle of olive oil after a good meal. (Photo by Nickster 2000)

It seems I'm slowly getting my appetite back. I can't be bothered to count calories as it's quite a hassle, but I'm back to using very liberal amounts of olive oil and butter. And of course, no fat camp would be complete without a daily supply of chocolate.

There is, of course, a problem with this approach, since I've already come to the conclusion that this kind of a diet does not make me fat. Then again, I'm not really looking to become a chubby but to gain back the weight I somehow managed to lose. A few extra kilos should be no problem, right?

Fat Camp (or How to Gain Weight with Carbohydrates)

Quick remedy for weight loss. (Photo by Slice)

Due to a loss of appetite (which in turn could be due to the 1st of May celebration that is a big thing here in Finland especially among students and often turns into a week-long beerfest), I noticed today that my weight has gone slightly below 60 kg. I don't really consider this a good thing, since I'm 182 cm tall and didn't have much fat to lose to begin with.

During the next days (or weeks, depending on how long it takes) I'm going to try to gain a few extra kilos. I've already broken my normal low-carb routine and eaten a pizza. I don't even remember the last time I ate a pizza. It was pretty good. My appetite is still not back, so I'm kind of force-feeding myself here, which feels rather odd after a week of forcing yourself not to eat.
